The project will reconfigure S1 from a cogeneration plant to a 1.1 GW natural gas-fired open-cycle power plant, providing flexible reserve power to support renewable energy integration, with operations starting in 2027. Water desalination will be decommissioned to align with EWEC’s energy transition goals. The move supports the UAE's net-zero ambitions and EWEC’s target of generating over 50% of Abu Dhabi’s electricity from clean sources by 2030.

Set for phased commissioning from 2027 to 2029, it will generate 4.5 TWh annually by 2030, cutting 8 million tonnes of CO₂ and eliminating 36 billion cubic feet of gas use per year.
